Arnis Balčus

Arnis Balčus’ large-format color photographs depict various rituals that have disappeared from our daily lives as a result of social and political changes. Forgetting these rituals has precipitated a collective amnesia — forced or voluntary suppression of individual memories, which has been practiced since the restoration of Latvia’s independence — both to deny Latvia’s Soviet identity and to overcome current political and economic failures. Look at the photographs carefully! In the videos to come, I will tell you about common aspects of the Soviet era, and you will have to indicate which of the photographs from Arnis Balčus’ photo series “Amnesia” correspond to my narrative!
